Toledo, Ohio - Some local teenagers in the Toledo area who need help are getting help with some basic necessities, all beautifully wrapped in a hand-sewn bag.

They are called bags of love. Each one is sewn and assembled by a local group called Bags of Love 419, who cooperated with the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library this year.

They say all this is to spread hope and love to children who may not have much hope and love at home.

Although they have been doing this for several years, Davidia Seevers said this is the first year of cooperation with the library.

"As far as the library is concerned, this is just brand new, and we haven't received feedback yet, but we are very excited about what we can do," Sivers said.

Bags of Love are hand-packaged and contain hygiene products, toiletries, games, school supplies, snacks, water bottles, hats, scarves and feminine hygiene products.

Kim Payne of the Lucas County Public Library in Toledo said these items "are things that anyone needs. These are necessities, especially for those in desperate need."

So far, 20 bags of love have been sent to the main library in the city center.

Penn said they have been seeing this demand because they are experiencing an influx of young people into the library until closing time, especially since the beginning of the pandemic.

Angel Myers with Bags of Love said that all this was organized in the community by about 75 local volunteers.

"Not everyone is together at the same time. We have different people working on different projects. We have never seen the people who make scarves and hats for us at home," Myers said.

The best part she said is seeing the joy and hope on the faces of people they can help, children and teenagers "feel happy, like them important and loved".

The people of Bags of Love gather for a sewing party on the third Saturday of every month from 10 am to 1 pm, and the next one is scheduled for December 11th (due to the upcoming holiday).

Anyone is welcome to participate, they only need to bring a portable sewing machine, if they can't sew, there are many other things to do, such as turning the bag and feeding the drawstring, and preparing the packaged items.
